# Bathroom Wall Panel Ideas: Glass vs Acrylic vs Tiles

**By CreoGlass Design Team** · 2026-10-31

Bathroom wall panel ideas have moved a long way beyond plain white plastic. Today you can line a shower in seamless coloured glass, wrap a bath in a textured finish, or keep classic tiles and use panels only where water hits hardest. This guide compares the three main choices, glass, acrylic and tiles, on looks, cleaning, lifespan and installation, then shares design ideas from real bathrooms so you can decide what suits your room.

## Why choose wall panels instead of tiles?

Panels cover large areas in a few pieces, so there are far fewer joints. That means less grout to discolour, quicker cleaning and a cleaner, more contemporary look. Panels can also be fitted over a sound, prepared wall in a shorter time than a full tiling job, which matters when the bathroom is the only one in the house.

Tiles still have their place. They suit traditional schemes, curved walls and floors, and they allow small repairs. The right answer is often a mix: panels in the shower and around the bath, tiles on the floor or as a feature.

## Glass vs acrylic vs tiles at a glance

| Factor | Toughened glass panels | Acrylic or PVC panels | Ceramic or porcelain tiles |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Look | Deep gloss, true colour, premium | Gloss or printed effect, lighter feel | Wide choice of styles and textures |
| Joints | Very few, sealed | Few, jointed or trimmed | Many grout lines |
| Scratch resistance | High | Lower, can scuff | High (glaze), grout can wear |
| Heat near radiators and lighting | Stable | Can move with heat | Stable |
| Cleaning | Wipe clean, no grout | Wipe clean, avoid abrasives | Grout needs regular attention |
| Made to measure | Yes, cut-outs planned before toughening | Usually cut on site | Cut on site |
| Typical use | Feature showers, baths, premium cloakrooms | Quick refits, rentals | Floors, traditional and textured walls |

## Glass bathroom panels

Glass gives the most luxurious finish of the three. The colour is printed or painted on the back of the glass, so the front is a hard, glossy surface that does not fade, stain or scratch easily. Because each panel is made to measure, it can run floor to ceiling in a shower with a single vertical joint, or wrap a window reveal in one piece.

All of our [glass bathroom wall panels](/collections/full-bathroom-glass-cladding) use toughened safety glass. Toughened glass cannot be cut once it has been toughened, so valve positions, niches and window returns are surveyed first and built into each panel before manufacture. That is why glass takes a little longer to plan, and why it fits so precisely.

## Acrylic and PVC panels

Acrylic and PVC panels are lightweight sheets, often with tongue-and-groove edges, that can be cut on site with standard tools. They are quick to install and suit rental properties or short-term refits. The trade-off is durability and feel: plastic surfaces scratch and dull more easily, can flex on uneven walls, and rarely match the depth of colour that glass gives.

If you are comparing quotes, look closely at what is included. Trims, sealants and wall preparation can change the true cost of any system.

## Tiles

Ceramic and porcelain tiles remain the most flexible option for texture and pattern, from zellige-style handmade looks to large-format marble effects. Their weakness is the grout. In a busy family shower, grout lines are where mould and discolouration start, especially with poor ventilation. Large-format tiles reduce the number of joints but are heavy and need a very flat wall.

## Bathroom wall panel ideas from real projects

### 1\. Seamless pale grey in a walk-in shower

A soft grey-white glass lines all three shower walls, with a recessed niche lined to match. The few vertical joints sit in the corners, so the walls read as one calm surface. It is a good choice for small bathrooms, where reflected light makes the room feel larger.

### 2\. Grey glass around a bath and window

In the bathroom above, grey glass replaces tiles around the bath and returns into the window reveal. Wrapping the reveal removes one of the hardest areas to tile neatly and keeps condensation off painted plaster.

### 3\. Textured silver for a statement

Textured glass adds depth without a busy pattern. Here a silver bark-effect finish runs around a shower bath, with lit niches set into the wall. Under downlights the texture changes through the day.

### 4\. A single colour panel as the focal point

You do not need to clad the whole room. One coloured glass panel on the shower's back wall, with white tiles either side, gives a strong focal point at a lower cost than full cladding.

### 5\. Colour inside the niches

For a cloakroom or en suite, a neutral grey glass on the walls with a bright colour lining only the niches and window reveal adds personality without overwhelming a small space.

### 6\. A glass upstand behind the vanity

Behind a basin, a glass upstand protects the wall from splashes and toothpaste, and links the vanity to a mirror cabinet above. A warm yellow or a soft neutral both work, depending on the rest of the scheme.

## Practical points before you choose

- **Wall condition:** every panel system needs a sound, dry and flat substrate. In wet zones, the wall behind should be suitable for a shower area before any finish goes on.
- **Ventilation:** good extraction protects any finish. For a bathroom, [Approved Document F](https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/61deba42d3bf7f054fcc243d/ADF1.pdf) sets a minimum intermittent extract rate of 15 litres per second in new work.
- **Fittings:** decide your shower valve, niche sizes and any electrics before panels are ordered, so cut-outs can be made in the right place.
- **Sealing:** joints and edges should be sealed with a sanitary silicone suited to the finish, and checked periodically.
- **Safety:** glass bathroom panels should be toughened. Our guide to [laminated and safety glass](/blogs/news/laminated-glass-uses-safety) explains the main types.

## What affects the cost of glass bathroom panels?

Every bathroom is priced individually, as the room shape drives the cost more than the finish. The main factors are the number and size of panels, cut-outs for valves and niches, window returns, colour or texture, wall preparation and access. A single feature panel costs far less than a fully clad room, and many clients start there.

## Bathroom wall panels: frequently asked questions

### Are glass bathroom panels slippery or cold?

Wall panels are not walked on, so slip is not a concern. Glass feels similar to a glazed tile to the touch and warms to room temperature.

### Can glass panels go over existing tiles?

Sometimes, if the tiles are firmly bonded and flat. Often it is better to remove them so the panels sit flush with trims and fittings. We confirm this on the survey.

### How do you clean glass shower panels?

A squeegee after showering and a weekly wipe with a mild, non-abrasive cleaner keep glass looking new. There is no grout to scrub.

### Are acrylic panels a good alternative to glass?

Acrylic is lighter and quicker to fit, and suits short-term refits. For a long-term family bathroom or a premium finish, glass is harder wearing and holds its colour better.
